2. Social Studies Research: first thing due is 5 W papers - due date = 12/5 (It is okay to turn them in on Friday if another day is needed!
See the Social Studies page for more detail on the project.
We had a long morning today working on the second district reading proficiency assessment. The kids had a long science article to read about an experiment comparing rain water with acidic rain water and the damage it does to plants. They also had a piece of prose writing and a poem. Some questions asked them to compare the prose to poetry, requiring them to incorporate the elements of both types of writing. In all, there were 18 multiple choice questions, one ERQ, and one SA. Almost everyone finished!! Yeah!! Those that finished in the beginning did a great job staying quiet so others could have the quiet time to concentrate. I am proud of their hard work. Now I get to score them!!
Tomorrow, we will see a drama production about Anne Frank at 10:00. Before going to the performance, groups of students will work on one of the following tasks to gain some background knowledge about Anne Frank and the time period during WWII: 1) reading/discussing an article about her life with comprehension questions; 2) reading a timeline, plotting specific places of events in Europe that were part of her life, and researching specific vocabulary/events found on the timeline; 3)reading a different timeline and using an app called KIDSPIRATION to reorganize the information, based on main ideas, in a nonlinear fashion. This will help students to 'chunk' information together to see the bigger picture in the end. I am looking forward to tomorrow!! Hopefully we will have time after the performance to work on our research notes.

I was just checking my email and wanted to share this note I received from our representative at LexiaCore5. I told her I would share this with the kids tomorrow, and I thought you would like to hear the good news as well.
The kids are working very hard and I am proud of their success. The goal is to show growth, no matter what level you are on, and that is definitely what they are doing.
Hope you had a good weekend, and I promise to do better posting homework this week. Must be "senior moments!"

As of tonight at 9:36 pm, 11 of the 23 kids have completed at least one level. We are inching our way closer and closer to a celebration!! If they want to log in at home, all they have to do is go to lexiacore5.com and go to work!!
11/10/13: It is almost midnight, and I was just checking on how the kids were doing with the LexiaCore5 reading program we are using on the computers. I am really excited with the progress they are all making! I might dream about reading reports tonight, but it will be worth it!.
Congratulations to Nidhi who yesterday passed her first level. Her certificate will be waiting for her return on Tuesday. In all, 9 kids have passed at least one level, and I know the others will be right behind them. I think we will have to celebrate when all 23 have passed at least one level. Four kids have already logged on this weekend and worked a bit, and since there is no school for the kids tomorrow, maybe a few more will have a little time to work. Thanks for your continued support and all that you do for your child!

TODAY: 11/7/13
We had a very busy morning today. It started with our second "mile run" for the Physical Best Test. Only one injury, but he survived. Some had a faster time than the first run, and some had a slower time. We worked on various reading and language arts assignments and some timelines for social studies, depending on needs, and one group FINALLY got to start reading their book, The Great Gilly Hopkins ,on the NOOKS, which they were very excited about. I could really go broke if I had 7 more iPads and another set of Nooks or Kindles! I just keep dreaming! :) Anyway, it has been a productive day!!
CONGRATULATION, Camryn! She is the first person to pass her second level in Lexia!! That is terrific!!

* The class average on this quiz Friday was 58%. Today, it was 61%. I am hearing a lot of students say they are not studying and some don't really seem to care. Vocabulary is key in Social Studies. There is no reason for this class to have an average on the quiz of 61% on a second try. Please talk to you child about the importance of studying for these quizzes. They will not have the chance to keep taking these over and over again in the future.
3. Human Characteristics quiz tomorrow
4. Go Math quiz 10/23/13.
Just a reminder: One Battle Book MUST be completed by the 29th and students must have their questions and answers written out in complete sentences. They need to remember to put the title of the book in their question! Answers should be in complete sentences. Please use the check list when questions are finished so full credit can be given.
